Some Books For Older Children

Inside The Titanic: A Giant Cut-Away Book
A beautiful book by Hugh Brewster and illustrated by Ken Marschall. Aimed at 4-8 year olds, it introduces them to this famous ship, and to her history. With all the renewed interest currently, because of the very popular movie about the sinking of this great liner, this would enable younger viewers to learn more about the ship herself.
The New Book Of Dinosaurs
An exciting book for dinosaur enthusiasts in the 9-12 age bracket. Dr. David Unwin, Richard Rockwood and Rob Shone provide a close-up look inside a dinosaur body, and there is a pull out dinosaur poster included.
Activity Atlas - The World At Your Fingertips
Sally Hewitt, et. al. provide an interesting look at geography through various activities aimed at 9-12 yr olds. They learn and have fun at the same time.

The American Library Association's Suggested Book List For Young Readers

This "Suggested Book List For Young Readers" provides suggestions for books that can be introduced to children at different ages. However, they may well remain favourites long after these ages.
It is divided into sections:
Birth to Eight Months
Eight Months to Eighteen Months
Eighteen to Thirty Six months
and
Three to Five Years
In April 1997, the "America Reads Challenge: Ready, Set , Read For Families" was introduced. Families need to read together; children need to be introduced to books at an early age, to foster a love for them which will remain throughtout their lives. It has also been found that children who are read to, and who read alone, tend to learn more easily, as they grow older.
